Calculations to support your planning submission
Show how your design meets its energy targets.
Barlings provides energy calculations, comparisons and supporting reports for planning requirements. We assess the proposed specification, calculate the effect of improvements and explain the results for your project team.
Send William and Kerry the exact planning condition or council request alongside your drawings. We’ll review the calculation requirements and confirm the work we can provide.
Discuss your planning requirement →What we provide
Clear comparisons and a report of the results.
Review the requirement
We identify the energy targets and comparisons relevant to the calculation work requested by your planning authority.
Calculate improvements
We assess proposed changes to fabric, glazing, building services or renewable energy provision, as appropriate to the project and agreed assessment method.
Explain the evidence
Our supporting report sets out the assessed specification, assumptions, comparisons and results, showing how the calculated performance addresses the agreed requirement.
Our service scope
Our work covers building energy calculations and reports demonstrating their results. Heat-network identification, heat-network feasibility studies and wider energy-strategy work outside the calculations are excluded. Where a planning submission requires these additional elements, your project team will need to arrange them separately.
Central Lincolnshire
Policy S7 calculation support and reports.
For residential projects with Central Lincolnshire S7 requirements, we can provide the calculation evidence and a report explaining how the assessed design achieves the relevant energy targets. This work is agreed alongside the SAP assessment.
The councils publish energy-efficiency guidance, checklists and energy statement templates. We review the requirements relevant to your project so the scope of our calculation report is clear. See the official Central Lincolnshire energy-efficiency guidance and templates.
A calculation report supports your submission. The planning authority decides whether the submitted evidence satisfies the condition.
Project example · Nettleham
Energy assessment support for a replacement bungalow.
Barlings supported the SAP, EPC, overheating and S7 energy work for a replacement bungalow in Nettleham. The project illustrates how planning energy calculations can sit alongside the other assessments needed by the design team.
We agree each service separately so you can see what is included. Read about our SAP work for this project and its overheating assessment.
Planning comparison example · Metheringham
Comparing a replacement bungalow with a Class Q alternative.
For a project in Metheringham, Barlings prepared SAP-based operational-energy comparisons and an indicative embodied and whole-life carbon appraisal to support the design team’s planning submission.
The alternatives were one proposed replacement bungalow and a permitted Class Q conversion into two dwellings. The report considered both total carbon and results per square metre and per dwelling, making the different floor areas and number of homes explicit.
Energy used during occupation
SAP-based calculations assessed the operational-energy performance of the proposed bungalow and the two conversion dwellings, with the construction, services and solar PV assumptions stated.
Carbon over the assessment period
The planning-stage appraisal brought the operational results together with embodied-carbon estimates over a 60-year period. It set out the material assumptions, generic carbon factors and excluded lifecycle stages.
The report found that retention had the lower upfront carbon impact, while the replacement bungalow had the lower assessed whole-life total under the stated assumptions. This was a modelled comparison of the specific development alternatives.
This work was an indicative planning-stage options appraisal, not a formally assured RICS whole-life carbon assessment. Carbon comparisons are scoped and quoted separately from SAP and the S7 supporting report service.
Guide pricing
S7 supporting report fees.
A report demonstrating how S7 has been achieved starts from £180 including VAT (£150 plus VAT at 20%), in addition to the agreed SAP fee.
The final fee depends on the calculation and reporting scope. Send the planning requirement and project information so we can confirm what is needed and provide a quotation.
For the underlying assessment prices, see our SAP calculations and EPC fee guide.
Before you enquire
Information that helps us quote accurately.
- The complete wording of the planning condition or council request.
- Site address and planning reference, where available.
- Plans, elevations and sections.
- Proposed insulation, glazing, heating, ventilation and renewable-energy details.
- Existing SAP or SBEM reports and the deadline for your submission.
For requirements outside Central Lincolnshire, send the relevant wording. We’ll confirm whether the requested calculation work is within our scope.
Your project, your quotation
Send us your planning energy requirement.
Tell us what the council has requested and which assessments you already have. William and Kerry will review the information and confirm the calculation and report scope.
