The Air Testing Process
The test itself is straightforward and usually takes around 1 hour on site.
1. Equipment setup
A fan and temporary screen is fitted into an external doorway and connected to measuring equipment, all the equipment is UKAS calibrated annually.
2. Building pressurised
The fan increases and decreases the air pressure within the building.
3. Air leakage measured
We measure this and check for leakage through the building envelope.
4. Test results calculated
The air permeability rate is calculated and compared with the required standard.
5. Certificate issued
A formal test certificate is produced for submission to Building Control.
Common Causes of Air Test Failures
Most homes pass without issue, but common areas that can cause air leakage include:
-
Air escaping behind plasterboard due to poorly installed board adhesive
-
The junction between floor and wall is a major weak point, and is a very common issue behind Kitchens and Bathrooms
-
Soil pipe service voids and boxed in areas
-
Suspended toilets are becoming a regular issue
-
Under stair cupboards
- First floor joints in chipboard floors
- Airing cupboards and associated pipe penetrations
If any issues are identified during testing, we are happy to offer practical advice to help achieve compliance. Please also feel free to give me a call to discuss any items or just to chat over the testing.
